What is a burst pipe?
If you hear water running in your walls or possibly reading this while in standing water, you might have a burst pipe on your hands. A pipe bursts when it is clogged and the water pressure cracks the pipe, when the pipe has frozen, or if the system is old.
What Do I Do To Fix a Burst Pipe?
Step 1: Turn off your “shut off water valve”
Every home has a valve that can shut the home’s water off from the water main. If your home is flooding from a burst pipe, shut off your home’s water to stop the flow.
These valves can be found in basements and outside; if you’re not familiar with where this valve is, call us!

What Causes a Pipe Burst?
Debris Build Up
Overtime, your pipes can build up debris like sediment, mineral deposits, hair, and grease. Once the pipe has collected enough debris to create a blockage in the pipe, the water pressure builds up, causing a crack and then break in the pipe. The water bursting out from the crack causes the “pipe burst.”
High Water Pressure
While high water pressure can ruin your appliances and fixtures, it will also increase the risk of bursting your pipes. Typically, your home should have a pressure of about 50lbs. Even just 60lbs is considered high water pressure. If you have high water pressure in your home, please contact us and we can help you install a high water pressure regulator to keep the pressure at a safe level in your home.
Frozen Pipes
Although frozen pipes are extremely uncommon to find here in Arizona, frozen pipes will break and cause major flooding. Just keep it in mind in case you ever move north or we have an unusually cold winter. Ice inside of a pipe builds the pressure, which when it releases will burst the pipe. If you do face freezing temperatures, keep your heat on and water moving through the pipes to reduce the chance of freezing.
How to Fix Burst Pipes
Before you locate the burst pipe, shut off the water to your home to prevent further flooding. You can do this by turning off the shutoff valve. If you’re not sure where this valve is, give us a call and we’ll zip over to shut it off and help you find the broken pipe.
Once we’ve found the broken pipe, we’ll begin our work. Depending on where the pipe is, we will choose the best method and course of action. If the burst pipe is underground and causing massive issues with your property, we can fix the pipe using trenchless repair, which doesn’t require any digging to fix the broken line. If the pipe is inside the home and accessible, we can replace the pipe section as needed.
How to Prevent Burst Pipes
Keeping your pipes clean will help reduce the risk of breaking a pipe. If your plumbing system is up to it, having your sewer line and a few other lines throughout your home routinely hydro jetted will help keep your pipes clean.
